I have an old Gateway laptop from early '03. When I start it up, I get "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I don't have the original disks, so I was thinking about starting from fresh. I'd rather not have to buy an OS so I'd like to go with one of the free ones.

Suggestions?

All I really want it for is to play DVDs. If it can connect to the internet, that's secondary, since we could let the boys play games on it. It's got to be easy with no learning curve, essentially easier than carrying my other laptop upstairs to do yoga. And I have to be able to download it on a different machine, and move it over on a CD or DVD. That's about it.

Ubuntu? Linux? Will I be a *real* geek if I use Linux? Will I never really be a geek because I have to ask advice on LJ?
