Costume Con!
May. 4th, 2009 10:09 amI’m SO going next year, for the whole weekend, if I can!
The idea of a whole day free made me giddy, so I tried to fit everything in. Considering the rain, that probably wasn’t a good idea. Since MD Sheep and Wool was only 30 minutes from Costume Con, I stopped there first. I walked in, got wet up to my knees, hugged
spanish_peacock and
dona_violante, marveled at their empty racks, and walked back out.
I went to Costume Con to dry out. (Heh. Ironic, eh?)
I had no idea what to expect from Costume Con. I had an address plugged into the GPS, some dry clothes in the car with me, and that was it. I even pulled out the crackberry and double checked my location while I was sitting in the parking lot.
Found a bathroom first thing to change in. I had no idea where anything was at, or what was going to happen. I saw an amazing 18th century pouffy dress and head first thing walking in, who turned out to be
demode.
Quick side note… I want to do 18th century now! *sigh* 1000+ years, and the SCA *still* doesn’t cover enough time. ;-)
After emerging from changing, I was delighted and relieved to see
silverstah right away. Whew! She looked great in her 15th century outfit! Her fabric is to die for, and I still have no idea how she pattern matched it that well.
sarahbellem swooped me up right away to lunch, and the day was off.
I just have to say, I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t really plan anything, but it was amazing to go to a strange place and immediately feel at home. Thank you!
I did a little shopping, socialized with many people, took a few pictures (not enough!), drooled over dresses (I don’t know if I like the 18th century or the Victorian Walking Dresses better…). I also HAVE to have an Elizabethan jacket now (by “now”, I mean I’ve been wanting one for the last year). Even though it’s been years since I’ve embroidered anything, I picked up one of
attack_laurel’s coif patterns from
kass_rants and
nq3x. Hey, it had my name on it! How could I resist?
Several people stopped me to take my picture, which surprised me a bit. Usually, they’re taking pictures of the boys, and I also felt a bit like I was wearing my day to day clothes, in plain blue wool, next to all of the stripes and silks.
Dinner was with
trystbat,
seekatesew,
lindseyerin37,
jubilima,
silverstah,
pinkleader,
attack_laurel,
demode, and
sarahbellem. All I can say about that is that I’ll never look at a Maunche medallion the same way again.
=8-O
The masque was scheduled pretty late – 8:30, but it only took an hour so I stayed through the whole thing.
jubilima’s Anne Boleyn entry was absolutely splendid.
isabelladangelo was the only other entrant I was familiar with, in her dazzling Eleanora of Toledo dress. What a hoot the masque was! Results? Anybody?
I slipped out at the end of the masque, because it didn’t look like we were going be set free any time soon for any real chance to say goodbye. I drove home through an absolute deluge. As magnificent as all of the silks were, I was happy to have my wool on for that.
As
pinkleader has already observed, the best way to do CC is to stay the whole weekend. I don’t regret going, that’s for sure, as it was the only way that I could, but a lot of the socializing was happening in the evening. And being there only one day I missed so many of the costumes! I can’t wait to see more pictures. There are a few other people that I met, but I was having a hard time remembering everybody’s name (hence all of the names in this post... just to keep track!)
Jeff mentioned to me casually on Saturday night, “Let’s do Rev War, too.” Impeccable timing, darling. Somebody must have tipped him off to what I would see on Sunday. Okay! As long as I can wear stripes…
I’ll get pictures up tonight. Overall, they’re not great, but I do have a few gems. Good subject matter. :-D

Twelfth Night
Jan. 11th, 2009 08:16 amI'm exhausted. I enjoyed myself immensely yesterday. Sure, the site was large and spread out, and our *stuff* was all over the place necessitating walking to and fro. There were some stressors, but none involved me personally. No, it was a great day, because a couple of wonderful things happened.
Congratulations to
ladyaneira and
alina_s for their elevations to the Order of the Laurel! It was well-deserved, and the great joy on your faces was touching.
ladyaneira, if you get a copy of the "Give Aneira a Paintbrush" (or whatever the title was, I missed the beginning of the "Give a Mouse a Cookie" bit), I hope you'll post it.
And for those that saw my Friday post - it turns out that when somebody says, "Thanks for offering to help, will you do hospitality food?" you should really check before you assume they meant *all* of the hospitality food! ::blush::
I can't forget
azpapillion and Baron J-sans LJ. They looked fantastic as they stepped up as Baron and Baroness of Ponte Alto. I hope somebody got pics.
Yeah, it was a day full of courts, but that wasn't that bad. They were short-ish, especially as I'd duck out between or after bits that I wanted to be there for. That's the nice thing about standing up for all of the Pearls and Laurels. Each time was a chance to leave afterwards. :-) I'm sure I missed a few things, but kept my sanity.
I still didn't have a chance to sit and chat with people for long, but that was me making up little unnecessary tasks and jobs for myself "oh, I should go get this - check that - find so-an-so." I need to learn to relax a bit. Of course, this is the last event without the boys for a while, so relaxing is out!
We got some pics, mostly of both elevations, hopefully we'll post in a few days. Today, we spend it with the boys and Luana going to see the dinosaurs!

On Relationships
Nov. 3rd, 2008 11:05 pmI remember realizing when my friends weren't perfect.
Scratch that. I've always known that, I know that nobody is perfect.
But, I do remember the day I realized that my friends weren't perfect, and that it was ok. It was more than ok. It meant that I didn't have to be perfect either.
When you first meet a new friend or lover, they seem like the perfect person. Maybe they have potential to be a match made in heaven, somebody amazing to look up to and to mentor you, or what have you. The longer you get to know them, the more cracks appear in the facade. It never fails. The better and deeper you know somebody, the more you get to know their flaws.
I've never loved anybody who didn't drive me batty on occasion. (Read: yes, you all drive me batty sometimes)
And honestly, I'm certain that nobody who has ever loved me hasn't been driven batty on a regular basis. (Read: yes, I know I drive YOU all batty sometimes)
But, that's ok. We're not perfect. Our friends aren't perfect. They drive us nuts, we drive them nuts, we all have personality quirks that grate a bit.
But, what makes them friends is that they still love you anyway (and vice versa). Not even always despite your flaws, but flaws and all.

What children see
Jul. 16th, 2008 09:53 amI'm trying very studiously to avoid drama right now. So in lieu of a real post, I give you a cute Henry story.
The other night, I was writing a comment on a post from
tashadandelion. Henry was sitting on my lap, lounging lazily after waking from a nap.
Henry: "What are you doing?"
Me: "I'm writing to Miss Tasha."
Henry: *looks at the screen*
Henry: "Is Miss Tasha a butterfly?"
Me: "In fact, she IS a butterfly, little boy."
ETA:
In the same vein.... I showed Henry the moon landing on YouTube yesterday morning, since he's been in a rocket and astronaut kick. He asked "is that ME?" Sure! I thought he was going to burst from happy about the whole thing.

Picture post!
Jul. 14th, 2008 11:44 amEventually, I will do one more post, hopefully a sort of dress diary, with pics and explanation of the gown process. For now...
