I ignore the Facebook apps because what with people I know from previously and people I know through roller derby, there are waaaaay too many people on that list for me to follow all that stuff. A lot of them are just cutesy things that people send out. I don't think it notifies them if you don't accept, though, so I just leave those things off to one side and pay them no attention.
I now include Facebook in my catching-up set of tabs in my browser: I check email, then check LJ, then look at the "status updates" pane in my Facebook homepage. The status updates are nice because it's just little micro-updates and you can skim down pretty quick.
LOL @ the bird. Never kept birds, and that's why-- I can't cope with anything scarier than a cat!
