[SCA] Merry Rose Madness

Whenever you have a large group of people trying to get things done, you’re going to have disagreements. In the end, I don’t think it matters so much that everybody gets their way or is happy with the outcome. That’s never going to happen. What’s important is that everybody feels listened to, and that their opinions are valid.
For non-Atlantian SCAdians, you might just want to skip, unless event sites interest you on a philosophical level. Atlantian SCAdians, you might want to skip if you’re utterly sick of it.
Oy vay. I don’t think I’d mind these big discussions on the Merry Rose if they were only once every so often. Getting rid of the cloved fruit thread would have done wonders for my tolerance of this one.
That said, I do find the question of a permanent Crown site interesting (note that I haven’t read anything yet since this morning; maybe it’s gotten nasty). I agree with it more than I disagree with it, but I think there still might be better ideas out there.
I think that the issue of Crown tourney might be better addressed by allowing groups to bid on them up to and even over a year out. There’s simply no way that most sites are going to be available with only six months to spare.
Frankly, I think it’s silly for BOTH Crown and Coronation sites to be chosen after the Heirs have been chosen (am I understanding this correctly?). If you want to be Royal, you’ve got to be willing to travel. If you are from Bright Hills, and you don’t want to attend a Crown in South Carolina, don’t fight in the Crown preceding that one. (Not that I think you should fight in Crown if you don’t want to travel, but that’s another matter.) For that matter, if you live in Bright Hills and your Crown is held in South Carolina, it’s a great chance to travel without having to lug your armour all that way, but that’s neither here nor there.
I *can* understand why a couple might want Coronation to be closer. It’s a big ceremony, you’re bringing everything, you want everybody who is close to you to be able to be there. Makes sense to me. You should still be willing to travel, oh, maybe 5-6 hours?
So, here’s my idea. Let Crown be chosen a year ahead of time (or more). Move Coronation to the permanent site in Riedsville, NC. That makes Coronation reasonably central for all royals, and addresses four events on the yearly calendar, not just two.
Is there an obvious problem with this idea that I’m missing?
