I was just looking at a blog about waterfalls, and he started discussing negative ions. Theory is, moving water, certain winds, etc. create negative ions, which, when breathed in by humans, boost serotonin levels, alleviating stress and depression.

Ok, this all sounds very good, and like it could be (and has been) totally exploited by marketers. I know there are negative ion purifiers, etc.

On the flip side, devices like computer monitors put forth positive ions. Hm. Is that why people are always so pissy on the internet? (And why I’m always hating my job….?) Maybe I just need to get a waterfall for my desk. :-D

Or maybe this theory is just a big ol’ duh.

Maybe you can get a tiny air purifier that puts out negative ions.. that'd be double the benefit considering the poor quality of air down in the dungeon.

They make fountains specifically for cats to drink out of. You fill it up when it gets low, but the water doesnt get stale and the cat likes to drink the fresh water.

The only fountain my cats will drink out of is the toilet. Sigh...

Yeah, for dogs too.

We have a fountain for the dog. It's called "I put a bowl under the pipe from the AC units". On the plus side, if it's really hot and we're running the AC overtime, there's plenty of water for the dog. :-D

I've seen those.. but I could never rationalize the extra cost and cost of running it really.. I have those vacation water bowls that fill up as the kitty drinks...

My mom stopped using her fountain because the cat would drink out of it though and cause the motor to buzz because there wasn't enough water.

BWHAHAHAhahahahaha!

Hee hee!

Hahahahaha!

Can't.

Breathe.

Too.

Funny.

*giggle*

I work in a dungeon. Basement, no natural light, and we're all sick all of the time. Actually, a coworker of mine has a plant with one measly little vine on it. Can't remember the type - but usually it's one of those that takes over. Not here!

Probably a philodendron, they seem to like 24-hour fluorescence & will grow almost anywhere. But apparently your dungeon lies outside the magic circle of "almost".

The idea that "negative ions" are good for you is pretty much pure myth. Here's a pretty good summary of the whole situation from a scientific perspective:

Where's the fun in that?

I suspected something of the sort, considering I only found one article from '02 plus a bunch of marketing crap.

I still choose to believe that having a waterfall at my desk is good for me. :-D

Imho, I think the reason why we become negative around the computer is because, as much as well all hate to admit it, we are animals. It is unnatural for a human being to be sitting in the exact same spot for 8 or so hours a day. Humans are meant to hunt, gather, farm, or do some other activity that at least involves walking or making something. We are meant to do something that involves more than moving our fingers for 8 hours. Because of our self imposed constraints to "do a good job" as part of the corporate/gov't workforce, we force ourself, against our natures, to be tied down to a desk all day and only move our fingers.

Now, the reason, I believe, the waterfall and other aspects of nature create a calming affect is simply because we are animals. The natural surroundings appeal to our instictual animal self. Humans are rather unique in being a wanderers and we also are rather unique in liking "pretty" things. Most waterfalls are pretty. Flowers, the way the light falls through the autumn leaves, these are the things we enjoy because almost all humans enjoy natural aspects of life given our feral past.
