Just saw Star Trek, and I'll say just what I saw when I watched the trailer.

Dude.

We don't see many films in the theater (by the time you add on the babysitting it's spendy) but that was totally and completely worth it. And I called some of the geekisms even before Jeff did. Ok, one. Still proud of myself.

If you posted a spoilerific review and want to give me a pointer, I'd enjoy reading them now. :-)

Spoilers welcome in comments. You've been warned.

just got back from seeing it tonight too

awesome!!!
my favorite part was the way all the main characters TOTALLY channelled the original actors. you could just see that they had studied those tapes over and over. right down to the Kirk leg cross thing. brilliant!!

ETA...when the random guy put on the RED jump/parachute suit we all said out loud "no! not the red suit!! you're SO gonna die!!!" I wanna see it again to see if we cant pick out more stuff like that :)

That was the one I caught and enjoyed so much. I leaned over to Jeff and said "dood, his entire suit is red." Jeff said, "Oh, he's toast!"

I didn't watch the original series as much as Next Generation, but I knew enough of the jokes that I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

Anyone else notice that it quotes a lot of Wrath of Khan? Obviously, there's the whole Kobayashi Maru scenario thing, of course, but-- there's a YouTube clip of the ten minute battle in WoK where Khan's Reliant catches Kirk with his shorts down, and... yeah, one can see the young officer in the Admiral.

Saavik: You lied!
Spock: I exaggerated.

And the last scene where Kirk jaunts his way to the captain's chair tossing his head while telling McCoy to fasten his seatbelt-- is totally William Shatner.

We saw it last night too! Squeeeee, such fun!! I knew "Sylar" would be a great Spock but I really adored Karl Urban as Bones.

Yeah, he was great. Jeff's seen more of the original, so he picked him out by his style before it was apparent who he was going to be. Awesome.

Favorite bit of dialogue:

NERO: [paraphrased slightly] I'd rather die in agony than be rescued by the Federation.

KIRK: You got it. Sulu - Fire!

Did you follow the link I posted earlier? That goes into some specific details, but it's quite intense, scary, and violent. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you really really wanted to, go see it by yourself first, then make a judgment call. I couldn't in good faith call it a kids' movie. There's a lot in there that will give an impressionable young guy nightmares.
